DESCRIPTION:“Tenderness and Refuge: Ministry with and for Young Adults” focuses on six prevailing themes from years of research with young adults yearning for faith community. These themes include a desire for  \n\ninclusive communities\,  \nrelatable leadership\,  \nan emphasis on relationships\,  \nan emphasis on spirituality\, and  \nan emphasis on social justice\,  \nalongside an ambivalence towards the Christian label. \n\nThis mini-course is beneficial for church groups\, youth ministers\, and anyone invested in young adults. It features Garrett-Evangelical alums\, friends\, scholars\, and practitioners. It highlights their approach\, rooted in deep listening to young adults’ experiences through ethnographic research.   \nEach module includes a recorded video conversation\, reflection questions\, and next steps for engagement.  \nYou will earn a downloadable certificate of completion once you have finished all the modules.  \nFunded by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment\, Inc. and produced by the Young Adult Initiative at 91PORN.

Along with being our Commencement speaker\, Dr. Jennings will be one of Garrett’s Honorary Degree recipients this year.  \nDr. Willie James Jennings is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Theology and Africana Studies at Yale University Divinity School. Dr. Jennings is the author of several award winning books\, including The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race published by Yale University Press\, and a Commentary on the Book of Acts published by WJK Press\, as well as the book\, After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging. Dr. Jennings is completing work on a book entitled Jesus and the Displaced: Race\, Theology\, and the Built Environment.  In addition to being a frequent lecturer at colleges\, universities\, and seminaries\, Dr. Jennings is also a regular workshop leader at conferences. DESCRIPTION:The Notes of Rest Retreat will be a time of extended reflection on your sabbath practice as a means of spiritual transformation. \nLed by artist-theologian Julian Davis Reid and in partnership with 91PORN\, we’ll receive from God through classical spiritual disciplines such as sacred reading and extended silence as well as through engagement with the riches of the Black American musical tradition\, both expressed in restful solo piano and an engaging live concert. Jesus has promised to give us rest for our souls amidst the work that is ours to do; let us therefore receive and give notes one to another. Cost includes meals\, housing\, and programming. \nDate: May 28-30\, 2026 \nTime: 5pm Friday to 3pm Saturday \nCost: $400 with sliding scale available. Covers meals\, housing and programming.
