Learn about the history and use of icons\, the process of writing an icon\, and engage in the process itself. \nFor over two decades\, Malham has engaged deeply in both the artistic and theological dimension of sacred image making. As an artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago\, he has not only created sacred icons but also led workshops\, retreats\, and lectures across the country\, fostering a renewed understanding of iconography as a living spiritual practice. Malham fuses ancient iconographic traditions with randomly encountered object – the rubble and refuse of everyday life – salvaged from the alleys\, streets\, and shadows of Chicago’s urban wilderness. \nNo previous art experience is necessary or even preferred. The workshop is primarily a spiritual journey and not an aesthetic exercise. The workshop can handle 8-10 people. All (non-toxic) materials are supplied\, and participants keep a finished icon. \n the artist:\nJoseph Malham draws on his rich Greek and Assyrian heritage to inform a lifelong devotion to sacred art and iconography. An accomplished writer and educator\, he holds a degree in history from Loyola University Chicago and pursued further artistic studies in Rome. Although initially drawn toward a career in the contemporary gallery world\, Malham ultimately chose to follow a spiritual calling\, dedicating his work to sacred rather than secular expression. What does it mean to be treated as someone who does not belong\, someone whose presence makes other people feel uncomfortable\, angry\, or disturbed?” Dr. Anthony Reddie is the professor of Black theology and director of the Centre for Black Theology at the University of Oxford. Britain’s preeminent Black theologian\, he is the author of many texts including\, recently\, Introducing James H. Cone: A Personal Exploration and Theologising Brexit: A Liberationist and Postcolonial Critique. \nOn March 19\, 4:00 p.m. CST\, Dr. Reddie will deliver the 3rd Annual James H. Cone and Emilie M. Townes lecture at Garrett’s Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful\, and streamed free online. In his address\, Dr. Reddie will reflect on how Black theology can diagnose the evils of Christian nationalism\, and the ways that migrants are treated in the United States and throughout the world. A crucial word for a world in crisis\, we invite you to join us as we reflect on the work to which God calls us. \nClick here to read an interview with Dr. Reddie\, for more information about how Drs. This course invites participants to remember leadership as an embodied practice—one that integrates body\, mind\, spirit\, and collective wisdom. Through the lenses of politicized somatics\, polyvagal theory\, grief tending\, deliberate care\, and trauma-informed awareness\, we will explore how our bodies carry histories of power\, resilience\, and adaptation—and how reclaiming our embodied intelligence transforms how we lead\, relate\, and create change. Participants will learn to recognize their conditioned tendencies and nervous system patterns\, build embodied resilience\, and cultivate the capacity to lead from grounded presence. Each week offers a blend of somatic practices\, reflective dialogue\, and teaching to support integration and alignment. This course is for those who sense that inner work is political work—and who long to lead with more authenticity\, integrity\, connection\, and care in service to collective liberation. $1000\, Sliding Scale available\, for an online synchronous cohort experience with Jia Johnson.
