There will be an opportunity to ask Ms. Williams about her artistic process and her work with burgeoning womanist artists from around the world. SUMMARY:Community Worship: Service of Recognition
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, May 4 at 4pm in the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful for a Service of Recognition to honor and celebrate the many achievements of our students. The Garrett community will gather in this worship service in the tradition of the Honors Chapel and Seniors Chapel services that have been held in previous years. The service will also be livestreamed. \nThis service will be framed by the planning and leadership of some of our graduating seniors. It will include the preaching of a graduating senior who has been chosen by their peers. The service will also feature rituals of conferring student awards\, anointing of our graduates\, and gift giving to our graduates.   \n  \nImmediately following Community Worship\, Community Meal takes place in Loder Dining Hall.

SUMMARY:PhD Studies Program Workshop: "Liberate Your Research"
DESCRIPTION:The Liberate Your Research workshop seeks to train radical scholars and activists in liberating our theories and methods from the constraints of the academic and non-profit industrial complexes. This workshop will transform the fear and anxiety that often overpowers writing\, theory-making\, and activism into a well of abundance\, radical self/collective love\, and writing prosperity. Dr. Naber has developed Liberate Your Research after junior feminist scholars in the Arab region who conduct research on gender violence; training journalists; teaching radical feminist of color methodologies to graduate students and junior faculty for over twenty-years on college campuses; and studying the possibilities of social-movement led research for over twenty years. \n  \nWorkshop Leader: Dr. Nadine Naber\nNadine Naber is a scholar-activist and Professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She is co-founder of the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program at the University of Michigan and founder of the Arab American Cultural Center at UIC. \nDr. Naber is the author/co-author of five books: Arab America: Gender\, Cultural Politics\, and Activism (2012); Race and Arab Americans (2008); Arab and Arab American Feminisms (2010); The Color of Violence (2006); and Towards the Sun. She is an expert author for UNESCWA; a board member of the Arab American Action Network; co-founder of the organization Mamas Activating Movements for Abolition and Solidarity and founder of Liberate Your Research. She is currently Co-PI of the report\, “The Status of Racial Justice for Arab Americans in Chicago at the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy” at UIC. She is co-author of the forthcoming book\, Pedagogies of the Radical Mother (Haymarket Press).

SUMMARY:The Call of the Deacon and the Future of United Methodist Ministry
DESCRIPTION:What is the future of United Methodist Ministry?  \nThis question may be more relevant now than it ever has been before. \nAt 91PORN\, we believe that the call of the Deacon is the future of ministry in The United Methodist Church. Since the founding of the Order of the Deacon\, Garrett has been a leader in preparing deacons for ministry\, and for following these leaders into the public square as agents of change for the Church\, for our neighborhoods\, and for the world. The call of the deacon is not peripheral at Garrett\, it is core to the mission of the Seminary as evidenced by the rich cohort of incoming deacons that we admit every year. \nRev. Dr. Virginia Lee\nIn light of this deep commitment to the Order of the Deacon\, Garrett is hosting a virtual conversation with Rev. Dr. Virginia Lee titled\, “The Call of the Deacon and the Future of United Methodist Ministry.” This event will be a great chance to learn both about Garrett\, and about the work that deacons are doing to lead the Church into new and innovative directions. Dr. Lee is the associate professor of Christian education\, the director of our Master of Arts in Faith\, Culture\, and Educational Leadership program\, and the director of Deacon Studies at Garrett.
