Learn about the history and use of icons\, the process of writing an icon\, and engage in the process itself. \nFor over two decades\, Malham has engaged deeply in both the artistic and theological dimension of sacred image making. As an artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago\, he has not only created sacred icons but also led workshops\, retreats\, and lectures across the country\, fostering a renewed understanding of iconography as a living spiritual practice. Malham fuses ancient iconographic traditions with randomly encountered object – the rubble and refuse of everyday life – salvaged from the alleys\, streets\, and shadows of Chicago’s urban wilderness. \nNo previous art experience is necessary or even preferred. The workshop is primarily a spiritual journey and not an aesthetic exercise. The workshop can handle 8-10 people. All (non-toxic) materials are supplied\, and participants keep a finished icon. \n the artist:\nJoseph Malham draws on his rich Greek and Assyrian heritage to inform a lifelong devotion to sacred art and iconography. An accomplished writer and educator\, he holds a degree in history from Loyola University Chicago and pursued further artistic studies in Rome. Although initially drawn toward a career in the contemporary gallery world\, Malham ultimately chose to follow a spiritual calling\, dedicating his work to sacred rather than secular expression.
