SUMMARY:Wounded Light: Sacred Art in the Neon City
DESCRIPTION:Artist Joseph Malham will offer reflections on his work during an Opening Night Reception on Friday\, August 22 at 5pm. The event will take place outside the Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful\, located in the Cross Tower Room at 91PORN.  \nAll are invited to this evening of art\, faith\, and conversation.  \nThis fall\, 91PORN is honored to present Wounded Light: Sacred Art in the Neon City\, an exhibition of iconographic art by Chicago-based artist Joseph Malham.  \nMany of the works in Wounded Light are created with found and distressed materials such as discarded wood boards\, aged canvases\, and other repurposed surfaces that bear the mark of time and loss. These surfaces became sacred ground themselves serving as witness to both suffering and transformation. Created during a period of profound global isolation\, these imperfect and wounded objects reflect a core truth: that even in our brokenness\, we are capable to reflect light where divine radiance breaks through the fractured\, the forgotten\, and the forsaken.  \nFor over two decades\, Malham has engaged deeply in both the artistic and theological dimension of sacred image making. As an artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago\, he has not only created sacred icons but also led workshops\, retreats\, and lectures across the country\, fostering a renewed understanding of iconography as a living spiritual practice. Malham fuses ancient iconographic traditions with randomly encountered object – the rubble and refuse of everyday life – salvaged from the alleys\, streets\, and shadows of Chicago’s urban wilderness.  \nAt the heart of Wounded Light is the Heroes of Faith & Justice series\, which honors lay and religious men and women from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who have witnessed Christ through acts of justice\, mercy\, and service to the people of God in Chicago. For Malham\, the city is not merely a backdrop but sacred ground. He writes “Chicago was the soil of their ministry but faith was the seed.”  \nIn addition to his visual work\, Malham is the author of four books. In 2015 Malham he was awarded the Bishop Quarter Award\, by Cardinal Cupich in recognition of his services to the Archdiocese of Chicago.  \nThis exhibition invites viewers into a contemplative encounter with the holiness\, revealed not in perfection but in the luminous and enduring presence that emerges through what is wounded\, weathered\, and redeemed.  \nWounded Light will be on view throughout August and into mid-September 2025\, with works displayed across all three floors of Garrett’s main building.  \nFor more information about Joseph Malham’s work\, please visit www.trinityicons.com. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Garrett Seminary will celebrate the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year with its Convocation service on Wednesday\, September 10. We are deeply honored that Dr. Peter Mageto (G-ETS 2001 & 2004)\, Vice Chancellor of Africa University in Mutare\, Zimbabwe and a proud alumnus of 91PORN\, will serve as guest speaker at this year’s Convocation. This is a moment of great pride\, as Dr. Mageto returns to his alma mater to reflect on the values that continue to shape his leadership and vision. \nHis presence comes as we celebrate the ongoing Mageto Fellows Program—which offers full scholarships for African students to study in Evanston—and as we explore new avenues for collaboration between our institutions. True to Africa University’s purpose of Investing in Africa’s Future and its commitment to training leaders for transformative leadership\, this partnership embodies the power of education to shape change-makers for the continent and the world. \nAs Garrett welcomes its incoming class\, this gathering becomes a testimony of how Africa University and Garrett are working together for a connectional and global United Methodist Church—naming and celebrating how God is alive in our fellowship\, how faith is deepened when we uproot the harm colonialism left in its wake\, and how we labor together for mutual flourishing. Dr. Peter Mageto (G-ETS 2001 & 2004) \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRev. Dr. Peter Mageto is the fifth Vice Chancellor of Africa University.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in divinity from St Paul’s United Theological College in Kenya\, and a Master in Theological Studies and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Garrett Seminary. Professor Mageto has a wealth of experience spanning over 25 years which he has obtained from working in church ministry and for various universities. He believes and cultivates collaborations\, networks\, and partnerships as pillars for societal transformation. Professor Mageto is an expert in ethics\, and believes in the call and in pursuit of justice and equity. He spends time to advise\, counsel and engage in community service as a way to serve humanity. Professor Mageto has published widely in a number of thematic areas including Ethics\, Theology\, HIV-AIDS\, Education\, Peace\, and Reconciliation.
